On a particularly windy evening, I arrived at Folsom Field in Boulder with anticipation and a little concern. The gusts were strong enough to make you question the schedule of the evening’s concert, but after a quick visit to the production room, it was confirmed that the storm was trending north. No delays were expected, so we made our way to the field.
The 23rd annual Telluride Blues & Brews festival took over Telluride Town Park this year with one of the best line-ups in it’s history. Right from the get-go things were on fire on the brand new Fred Shellman Memorial Stage with the Telluride debut of Con Brio showcasing one of the more talked about sets of the weekend. From the first notes to the last, this festival was one for the ages!
A show at Red Rocks in May can be chilly, but what better way to welcome summer than with bluegrass, rockabilly, and blues from The Wood Brothers, Shakey Graves, and The Devil Makes Three? It was easy to spot those traveling through as they were the first to hit the road when the temperature dropped. Let it be known – a May show at Red Rocks does not mean sundresses and shorts!
The Devil Makes Three’s sound is garage-y ragtime, punkified blues, old n’ new timey without settling upon a particular era. Joining them is Shakey Graves. With his new record, ‘And the War Came,’ he extends the ground—emotionally and sonically—broken by his 2011 self-released debut album, Roll the Bones. Shakey Graves sold-out all three shows at the Bluebird Theater this past weekend and you could feel the energy coursing through the room as people crammed in early buzzing with excitement. While men and women in their late 20s to early 30s made up a majority of the audience, you could find the suave elderly rubbing elbows with giddy teens. It was a weeknight show, but that didn’t stop the indie rocker from beginning his set at 10:45 and playing until a mean 12:30 a.m. People left with heavy lids and happy hearts.
