Dweezil Zappa – August 8th – Arvada Center

Dweezil Zappa returned to the Front Range last week to pay tribute to his father’s monumental legacy. The crowd was fairly sparse, and with Dweezil performing Frank Zappa’s epic catalog the audience has certain expectations in the music, and meeting those requirements is paramount to delivering a satisfying show. While his artistic attempts to make these songs his own to some degree is commendable, some hardcore Frank fans were left with a bad taste in their mouths.

Umphrey’s McGee – July 2nd – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Clouds and rain showers passed over Red Rocks Amphitheatre late Saturday afternoon, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of the Umphrey’s McGee faithful who nearly filled The Rocks for the first night to a two night run. Between Jefferson Waful’s lights, Jake Cinninger’s guitar, Dweezil Zappa’s sit-in, and a fireworks display during setbreak from nearby Bandimere Speedway, Red Rocks was on fire for this one!

Growing up in the Zappa family home, Dweezil Zappa marveled at his father Frank’s virtuoso skills as a composer and guitarist. After Frank’s passing Dweezil was inspired to do something to honor his father. Feeling as though there was a generational gap and a fair amount of public confusion as to what his father’s music really was, Dweezil set about creating an opportunity for music fans to make a new discovery.

Zappa Plays Zappa – February 14th – Ogden Theatre

The crowd was fittingly bizarre at the Ogden Theatre last Friday as fans old and new made their way in the doors for Zappa Plays Zappa. The late musical genius Frank Zappa is remembered for his off-beat sound, insanely intricate songwriting and preposterously hilarious lyrics. On Friday Dweezil Zappa and his band covered his father’s ‘Roxy & Elsewhere’ album in its entirety. The performance included theatrical elements, an array of musical instruments and talent, and a whole lot of perplexing lyrics–it was a perfect homage to Frank Zappa.
