Underground Music Showcase (UMS) – July 24th-27th – S. Broadway

Estimated read time 5 min read

The Underground Music Showcase (or UMS as it’s known); Denver’s four day run of diverse, audible splendor, occupied South Broadway this past weekend. People of all sexes, styles, shapes and sizes inhabited the streets for this region’s version of SXSW. UMS can be gritty and grimy, or tame and timid; at times relishing its theatrics or simply swaying to the formulaic, yet assuredly catchy 4-chord progression…

7 Seconds – July 24th – Marquis Theater

Estimated read time 5 min read

Legendary Punk band 7 Seconds hadn’t played Denver since 2005, and lead singer Kevin Seconds quipped that some of the people in the room were younger than that, but were hopefully conceived to the band’s music. Punk’s not dead, but when you’re blasting out hits at age 53, the show might end by eleven o’clock. Fans ranging from young teens to well over fifty came out to see these aging punksters at The Marquis Thursday and it was such a pleasure that fans hope they return before another nine years pass.

Jason Isbell & Hard Working Americans – July 23rd – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The Ogden Theatre is one of Denver’s best mid-size concert venues, and it was the perfect setting for this highly anticipated Rock n’ Roll double feature of The Hard Working Americans and Jason Isbell. It is intimate enough to get close to the bands, but big enough to feel like more of an “event” than your average rock club. The evening was packed with rowdy Rock n’ Roll, dramatic balladry, and a fair amount of psychedelic exploration thrown in for good measure.

Jason Isbell & Hard Working Americans – July 22nd – Boulder Theater

Estimated read time 3 min read

Hard Working Americans made their return to The Boulder Theater last Tuesday evening after their debut performance in December. This time the show was augmented by a full set from Alabama singer-songwriter Jason Isbell. Though the one constant in the venue was the heat and stagnant air that made it feel like Alabama in July the music would prove to be gritty southern fried Rock n Roll at its finest.

Nine Inch Nails & Soundgarden – July 21st – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden each delivered an excellent performance in their co-headlining performance at Red Rocks last Monday. Though Soundgarden may have been cast somewhat into the shadows by Trent Reznor and fantastic production quality of his performances, they were enjoyable and technically on point. The gravity of NIN’s performance took the audience through the full human emotional experience. Their portion of the show was massive.

Groove Festival – Georgetown, CO – July 18th-20th

Estimated read time 14 min read

Groove Music and Arts Festival weighed heavy with Funk, with a liberal helping of Bluegrass and Jam on the side. It also included camping, at a very modest price, and several workshops. Families were strongly encouraged to come; children were free and there was a special camping area for families near the main stage area. While the placement of the bands on the schedule wasn’t perfect, the musical selection was fantastic, the venue was gorgeous and the people who came were equally beautiful. All in all, it was an amazing weekend.

Old Crow Medicine Show – July 16th – Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Estimated read time 4 min read

The rain persisted throughout the day but the fans endured the weather and filed into Red Rocks for Old Crow Medicine Show. Old Crow made an appearance at Red Rocks last summer as openers for two sold-out nights with the Avett Brothers and this year they had their own sold out, one night event. With bodies covered with ponchos, umbrellas dripping from the down pour, bare feet thumbing and smiles radiating from underneath rain soaked hair, no one seemed bothered enough to stall the shindig.

Ms. Lauryn Hill – July 13th – Ogden Theatre

Estimated read time 5 min read

Despite a long wait before Ms. Lauryn Hill took the stage last Sunday night at the Ogden Theatre, the evening turned out to be an extremely creative night of music. The Mrs. Lauryn Hill experience came through town and was looking to get down, and that’s sure as heck what they did. Hill’s energy was at an extreme high, swag and attitude were on point, and her vocals could not have been more strikingly profound, impressively articulate, and unfathomably beautiful.
