The Decemberists & Spoon got together for a huge double bill at Red Rocks last Wednesday night and, despite a monster rainstorm that threatened to wash away the sold-out crowd, both bands delivered memorable sets. The night started with a set from Australian Indie-Rock darling Courtney Barnett and, while she didn’t do much for me, there were fans in the crowd for sure. Once Spoon took the stage it was on and, despite some very strange lighting choices by the band, they cranked out crowd pleaser after pleaser including several tunes from their most recent album They Want My Soul, and a healthy dose of Gimme Fiction favorites. After an hour break to allow the storm to pass and get fans back into the amphitheatre, The Decemberists took the stage with their anthemic, Broadway ready, Folk-Rock and proceeded to wow the surprisingly full venue with a set that was very heavy on material from their 2014 album What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World. When all was said and done, one thing was for sure, The Decemberists will be back at Red Rocks and when they are they should be headlining on their own!
